October 23 to October 27. Detailed Schedule of the Teachings by Gankar Rinpoche

Sunday, October 21: 1 p.m.

The Chenrezig (Four-Armed) Initiation. Chenrezig is the Tibetan name for Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

Tuesday, October 23: 7 to 9 p.m.

“The Differences between Sutra and Tantra and The Four Noble Truths”

Wednesday, October 24: 7 to 9 p.m.

“Training of the Mind (Lojong)”: This is a dynamic aspect of Buddhism that provides a variety of techniques to develop mental powers. Powers of compassion, loving kindness, patience, serenity, discernment, and so forth are described and praised in most spiritual traditions. Lojong is a practical system that shows us how to develop these powers in a logical, simple, and step-by-step manner.

Thursday, October 25: 7 to 9 p.m.

“Developing Compassion and Bodhicitta”

Friday, October 26: 7 to 9 p.m.

“Perfect Concentration and Insight”: Buddhist meditation is a combination of two techniques: Perfect Concentration (Shamatha) is the process of learning to focus the mind on a single object and gradually gaining the ability to effortlessly hold on to that object with complete clarity and stability-free of any distraction. The attainment of Shamatha allows the meditator to use the analytical techniques of Perfect Insight (Vipashana) to dispel the illusions of our naïve realism and gain direct realization of ultimate reality. It is through this combination of perfect concentration and insight that Enlightenment is attained.

Saturday, October 27: 1 to 3 p.m., 3 to 3:45-break, 3:45 to 5:30 p.m

“Tonglen: Giving and Taking”: An important element in the training of one’s mind while generating the altruistic aspiration of bodhicitta. “Giving” refers to the visualization practice of giving one’s wealth, success, prosperity, and even the future consequences of one’s positive action to others; “taking is the taking upon oneself the suffering, pain, unhappiness and misfortunes of others. The first practice is related to the generation of loving kindness and the second to unbiased compassion for all beings.

Sunday, October 28: 1 p.m.

The Twenty-One Tara Initiation. Tara is a female meditational deity who is regarded as the embodiment of all the buddhas' enlightened activity.
